The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) is a state-specific, population-based surveillance system developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to collect data on maternal attitudes and experiences before, during, and shortly after pregnancy.
PRAMS improves the health of mothers and infants by providing unique information not available from other sources. These data help state health departments and the CDC monitor changes in maternal and infant health indicators and evaluate public health programs and policies.
Participating states weight their data to represent all people who delivered a live birth in their jurisdiction during the calendar year. Visit the CDC PRAMS Website
PRAMS is primarily a mixed-mode survey. Participants are initially contacted by mail, with non-responders followed up via phone. Many states also offer a web-based option. All states follow standardized CDC protocols.
Each participating state samples individuals who recently delivered a live birth. Sampling is stratified to ensure representation of higher-risk populations. Infant deaths occurring post-birth are included. For multiple births, one infant is randomly selected for infant-specific questions.
